1100 position 58-14N 135-02W. Heading north in Lynn Canal
Thankful stopped at Glacier Bay National Park headquarters yesterday to dispose of our garbage, fill water, download email, and check out of the park. The crew got it all done by 10AM and Thankful headed out into Icy Strait where we turned left and headed east toward Juneau.
The forecast called for twenty knot westerlies in the strait, putting the wind right behind us and giving Thankful an additional knot or so of speed. The current had started to flood and was pushing us as well. We saw up to nine knots of speed over the bottom as we surfed to the east for twenty five miles.
Our destination for the day was Couverden Island at the intersection of Icy Strait and Lynn Canal. As we turned the corner we found some boats fishing for salmon so we stopped for a half hour to join them. A humpback whale swam among the boats entertaining the fishermen. No luck, so we headed into the natural harbor.
It was blowing twenty five knots as we crept into the anchorage in the lee of the island, but we found shelter in a landlocked cove under some tall pine trees. The wind whipped above us though and occasionally descended to the surface where it pushed Thankful around and tested our ground tackle.
Matt decided that this was crab territory so the mighty hunters launched the dinghy and set the trap before dinner. This morning we found one measly undersized dungeness in it... Sigh...
We are headed north in the Lynn Canal this morning and will be making a 140 degree right hand turn into the Saginaw Channel in two hours. Another couple of hours heading southeast will put us into Auk Harbor, the small boat facility on the north side of Juneau.
