Party Time

Early yesterday morning both Island Queen, Dick Moller's seiner, and "Yankee Maid", a seiner belonging to one of Dick's fishing buddies, tied up across the finger from Thankful.

After breakfast the Thankful crew caught the bus towards Juneau to do some provioning.  We decided to divide and conquer, with the girls headed for Costco and Matt and I on a QFB (quest for beveridge) and other small purchase items.  Our bus driver dropped Matt and me off next to Safeway and promised the girls he would get them to Costco.  He forgot about them though, and they ended up catching another bus headed in the other direction after an unplanned tour of downtown Juneau.  We all ended up safely back aboard Thankful a few hours later, fully provisioned for another month of cruising.

Last week Matt and Dick realized that both of their boats would be in Auke Bay at the same time so they planned to meet up for a party.  Yankee Maid and a third seiner, "Madre Delarosa", were also invited.  Dick had saved four large sockeye salmon to grill that he caught on his way to Auke Bay.  The Thankful crew was tasked with providing the corn and Caesar salad while Madre Delarosa supplied the macaroni salad, and Yankee Maid the pies.

Matt did an expert job of filleting, seasoning, and grilling the salmon on the seiners' charcoal grills.  There were twenty crew members from all four boats at the party on Island Queen's and Yankee Maid's back decks.  Alcohol flowed as freely as the bullshit, and there was a lot of laughing.  The fishing crews were a combination of older seasoned professionals and young tattooed rookies.  We were told that a mix is normal, but you hope to have a majority of pros so managing the kids isn't overwhelming.  Apparently Dick has too many inexperinced crew aboard for his liking, and he was discouraged by it.  The fishing also sucks this year, so the respite of a party helped everybody's morale.

This morning we are headed south for Tracy Arm and Ford's Terror.  How could you bypass a place called "Ford's Terror"?  We have to check it out.
